..As Actors Rally Round To Help Him

An accomplished and renowned poet, playwright, producer, broadcaster and actor, Faleti had started writing poems in earnest and they include Ijamba Odo Oba, Alagbara Ile ati Alagbara Oko and  Adebimpe Ojedokun and more so. The octogenarian Chief Adebayo Faleti is also known for being a successful Yoruba translator, a broadcaster, TV exponent and a pioneer of the first television station in Africa, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV). Information reaching us has it that, the talented actor who has featured in several stages and home videos is critically ill and needs support from Nigerians. At the moment, we gathered that the new faction of theater group visited the veteran actor because of his new state of health. It was said that the The Movie Ambassadors President, Saidi Balogun and his Exco visited Faleti at his residence in Ibadan and paid some of his hospital bills and promised to buy some of his scripts and make a movie on it and sell it to fetch him some money.

Woman Rapéd by DPO Inside Police Station in Lagos

A 31-year-old woman, Idowu Akinwunmi, has narrated how the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Onikan Police Station, SP Adekunle Awe, allegedly rapéd her, extorted and threatened her life in the station.

The victim said the incident occurred on April 15, 2014. She explained that on April 14 she was arrested by the police for “spurious” reasons. In her words:

“I work at an eatery on Keffi Street, Obalende, as a cook. The eatery also has a tailor’s shop in the compound and it belongs to the same person. There is also a quarters where we all live in the compound.

“Most of the workers are from Cotonou, Benin Republic. On Monday, a popular customer, known as Friday, came to eat. He later left, but some moments later, he returned to say he could not get a bus home. Friday had been making advances at me, but we were not a couple. I allowed him to sleep over.”

According to what Akinwunmi told Punch, at 1am, her boss, who discovered that someone was sleeping over, called the police to arrest her and the customer, Friday. She said two other people, who slept over at the tailors’ quarters were also rounded up.

She said, “My madam called policemen to arrest all of us. I had only a pair of shorts, a shirt and a wrapper on. I had N11,000 in my pocket and my phone was not with me. On getting to the station, I got the phone of a policewoman and used it to call one of the tailors to come and help.

We Have Too Many Quacks Masquerading As Teachers— Oshiomhole

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says the question  of his party, All Progressive Congress (APC), zoning the presidency in the 2015 general elections does not arise as the party has no provision for it. The governor also, in this interview, speaks on his running battle with teachers over qualification, his efforts to address infrastructural deficit in Edo and the National Conference, among other issues. Excerpts:

The burning issue right now in Edo State is your effort to reform the educators. You have rebuilt schools but the people who make good education possible – the teachers – you have been having running battles with them over the need to identify the qualified ones among them through competency tests. Even though the problem is there all over the country, can you describe the peculiar situation in Edo State?
We have abandoned the idea of competency test for what we now call assessment test. The basic difference is that we want to assess the teachers in our employment to find out what is the level  of their competence. That way we will be able to establish the level of assistance they require. For instance, a man who has a National Certificate of Education (NCE) but can’t teach will be put in the hands of experts to determine the kind of training he requires to make up for his deficiency.
