<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">Pan African financial institution, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has assured its local and international investors that it’s prudent focus on improved asset quality as well as the continuous adoption of strict cost efficient measures will help the bank achieve its objectives and priorities for the 2019 financial year and beyond.</span></div>
<a name='more'></a><u></u><u></u><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">This the bank has said will culminate into an institution with even stronger indices laced with the capacity to churn out strong double-digit growth in annuity-based trade services, enhanced offerings and improved customer service.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">Already, the bank has instituted a number of enhanced risk management and control framework which have in no small measure contributed to its financial performances and overall balance sheet growth over the years.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kennedy Uzoka, who noted this in a submission while presenting the bank’s 2018 full year results during an international investor/ analysts conference call on Thursday, explained that UBA’s well diversified asset book supported by stable funding structure, placed it in a premium position to perform remarkably despite the falling economic indices in its operating environment.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">He said, “In spite of slow recovery in economic activities in Nigeria (our single largest market), the Group’s total assets has grown by 19.7%, driven largely by a strong deposit growth of 23%, as the drive for retail deposits continue to yield desired results. Leveraging on enhanced customer service, the Group grew retail deposits by 48%, thus strengthening the funding base and providing the foundation for lower cost of funds in 2019.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">“Notably, the growth in balance sheet also partly reflects the impact of exchange rate difference between the reporting dates (2017: N331/USD vs. 2018: N359/USD), as 37% of loans and 27% of overall balance sheet is FCY-denominated. The Group maintained its appetite for a well-diversified balance sheet, with over 60% in liquid, low risk instruments.”<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">Uzoka explained to the investors that the bank recorded impressive growths achieved across major financial lines, recording a 48 percent year-on-year growth in retail deposits and improved CASA ratio to 77 percent.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">In its results for the year end December 2018, UBA gross earnings grew by 7.0 percent to N494.0 billion, compared to N461.6 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017. The Bank’s total assets also grew significantly by 19.7 percent to an unprecedented N4.9 trillion for the year under review<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">Throwing more light on the financials, he stated that gross earnings grew by 7% year-on-year, despite regulation and market conditions undermined the non-interest income line. Interest income, which contributed 73% of gross earnings, grew by 11%, driven by strong interest income on treasuries, reflecting the low-risk appetite and treasury-led strategy adopted during the year. He noted that the lower non-interest income was occasioned by market condition and regulatory impact on FX trading income, adding that growing volume on FX trading is compensating for lower margin on this business, thus reinforcing our positive growth expectation on this income line in 2019.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 25.68px;">While speaking on the strength of the financial institution in the coming years, especially on the back of it’s African and non-African subsidiaries, Uzoka said the bank’s recent foray into key markets and economies remain a milestone that will catapult the institution in the coming years.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; text-align: justify;">

<br />
The police is now seriously combing every nook and cranny of the country in search of one Adeoye Akeredolu, who is allegedly believed to be the leader of a group of guys who are into homosexuality, a very illegal and condemnable act in Nigeria.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The build up to Akeredolu's manhunt was occasioned by the confession of two purported members of the gang in a hotel somewhere around ijaye a suburb of Lagos. The two men, Tunde Ariyo(30), Femi Ojelabi(32), were nabbed by the police on a tip off by a staff of the hotel who contacted the police after noticing some traces and strange demeanour of the two men which pointed in the direction of homosexuality.<br />
After they were arrested and taken to the station, the two men were drilled for days by the police on many issues regarding their culpability in the ignominious and offensive acts. Pronto, it did not take then hours before they started singing like parrots and actually confessing that they belong to a group of friends that have for long time been involved in this ignoble action for whom those caught in the act are seriously stigmatized.<br />
This was when the group leader , Adeoye Akeredolu's name came up, and a number of other group members like Ricky Oro, Olajide Ojo, Shola Richard and many more all of whom are now at large.<br />
Tunde Ariyo and Femi Ojelabi in the course of their interrogation by the police and subsequent confession, severally and jointly confessed that they are actually not homosexuals in the real sense of the word but bisexuals because some of their members are married with children, even though, their wives are not aware of their other sexual preference..<br />
The police and detectives have since been on the lookout for Adeoye Akeredolu, the alleged leader of the illicit group, who they believe will shed more light on the activities of the group as a way to curb the seriously growing unholy act in the country.</div>

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">According to the 2018 financials filed at the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Tuesday, the Africa’s global bank’s gross earnings grew by 7.0 percent to <s>N</s>494.0 billion, compared to <s>N</s>461.6 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017. The Bank’s total assets also grew significantly by 19.7 percent to an unprecedented <s>N</s>4.9 trillion for the year under review.</span><u></u><u></u></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">These results, according to financial analysts largely demonstrates the benefits of the Group’s Pan-African footprints with continued growth in market share in key countries of operation across Africa. The contributions of ex-Nigeria subsidiaries at 40 percent, again confirms the strong footing of the Group’s franchise in Africa.</span><u></u><u></u></div>

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">Despite the challenging business environments in Nigeria and across key markets in Africa, the Bank’s Profit Before Tax was quite impressive at <s>N</s>106.8 billion, a 2.4 percent growth, compared to <s>N</s>104.2 billion in 2017 financial year. In same vein, the Profit After Tax rose by 1.4 percent to N78.6 billion, compared to<s>N</s>77.5 billion recorded in 2017. Due to lower foreign exchange trading income, Operating Expenses grew by 4.1 percent to N197.3 billion, compared to <s>N</s>189.7 billion in 2017</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">Reflecting the modest appetite of the Bank in the year under review as well as impact of IFRS 9 implementation, net loans recorded a prudent 3.9 percent growth to N1.72 trillion while Customer Deposits increased by a remarkable 22.5 percent to N3.3 trillion, compared to N2.7 trillion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017, reflecting increased customer confidence and enhanced service channels. Furthermore, Shareholders’ Funds decreased marginally by 4.8 percent to N502.6 billion, reflecting the impact of International Financial Reporting Standards 9 (IFRS 9) implementation.</span><u></u><u></u></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">Commenting on the result, the Group Managing Director/CEO, Kennedy Uzoka noted that the year 2018 was important for the Group, as it gained further market share in many countries of operation. More so, the CEO was excited at strategic achievements made in the year, including the start of wholesale banking operations in London, as it seeks to leverage the Group’s unique network across Africa. UBA also opened its 20th African operation.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-top: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">“Defying the relatively weak economic growth in Africa, earnings were positive and we grew our balance sheet by 20 percent, driven by the 23 percent growth in our deposit funding. In a period of economic uncertainty, we have focused on retail deposit mobilization, with exciting results. We recorded a 48 percent year-on-year growth in retail deposits and improved our CASA ratio to 77 percent, optimizing our funding mix, which will enhance our net interest margin (NIM), over the medium term,” Uzoka said.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-top: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">Uzoka remained confident that the Bank’s performance would be even stronger in the years ahead and shareholders would enjoy even greater dividends, as the Group is well positioned to take advantage of imminent fiscal reforms across many economies in Africa, a positive outlook which should stimulate new opportunities in infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture and resource sectors.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-top: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">He continued: “Our operations in the United Kingdom now offer end-to-end trade, treasury, structured finance, wholesale deposit taking and ancillary services. With this development, we are better positioned to fulfill our aspiration of deepening trade and capital flows between Europe and Africa. We are also pleased with the market acceptance of our new operation in Mali”.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-top: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">“Having said this, I am excited by the profitability of our ex-Nigeria subsidiaries, which now contributes an impressive 40 percent earnings to the Group. At the moment, our Nigerian business is benefiting from our product and operational focus, gaining market share - most importantly, the increasing penetration of our retail offerings is reassuring, as this fundamental progress aligns with our strategy of focusing on sustainable growth”.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-top: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">“With great optimism, we look forward to a more rewarding 2019 for our shareholders, as we further sweat our resources and optimize productivity towards delivering superior returns,” he concluded.</span><u></u><u></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; line-height: 20.544px; margin-top: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">Also speaking on the performance, the Group CFO, Ugo Nwaghodoh said that the improving mix of the Bank’s funding base and asset pricing, reinforce a positive outlook on Net Interest Margin(NIM) and broader balance sheet efficiency.</span><u></u><u></u></div>

<span style="font-family: "Century Gothic", sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 29.96px;">“Whilst considerable investment in people, digital transformation and channel enhancement masked cost efficiency gains within the year, with cost-to-income ratio at 64 percent, we are convinced that our diligent execution of new initiatives will ensure the reduction of Cost to Income Ratio(CIR) towards our medium-term target. Our balance sheet is being positioned to take full advantage of market swings and our strong 25 percent capital adequacy ratio provides headroom for growth, even under a BASEL III scenario. As it stands, UBA has started the year on a good note and should sustain the momentum, as we work towards improving our Return on Average Equity (RoAE),” Nwaghodoh said.</span><u></u><u></u></div>

<br />
A man, Mr. Morufu Hammed, who was finally arrested after years of abusing women was again let go by the police.<br />
In the case of Morolake Abike, who is seeking for public’s help after been repeatedly abused by her man friend, Mr. Hammed, who is very notorious when it comes to hitting and abusing women.<br />
She wants the public to know that she is afraid for her life after this man. Mr. Hammed was released after been arrested. She even tried to charge him to court but the case was dismissed.<br />
She also said she was not aware of his abusive behaviour prior to dating him, she even did not know that he had committed this same hideous crime with his ex who ran away with his two kids abroad. Because he is well known, he usually gets away with these brutal crimes, even despite that he had committed crimes both domestically in the United States of America and other foreign countries. He has lived in South Africa and Belgium where he was said to have committed different crimes.<br />
Even a family friend told Morolake that there was a time he threatened a lady called Dupe but unfortunately, she got missing to date. “He is a wayward man, always lamenting about his ex and the children for their running away after how many years, i am done with him, he should please let me be”, Morolake says, “and I am really afraid I don’t want to get missing and also I can’t run out of my country for any man I am only child for my mother .<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Nigeria people should help me from this man”.<br />
She said after been discharged from the hospital, she was receiving calls from strange numbers, threatening her that she will bear the consequences of her actions-her actions being that she charged him to court. She later had to change her number.<br />
She later realized that she did not want to be involved with this kind of man, and have tried to end the relationship many times, but being a dominating man that he is, he did not let her go, hence her cry for justice.<br />
This leads to the question of when the law of gender equality would finally be on. When will the system stop accepting bribes and these abusers evade the law? A lot of women have died knowing that there is array of women leaving their marriages. A lot of women have tolerated abuses from their spouses up to the points of losing their lives.<br />
Women cannot speak up knowing that even if they do, the law would not take any action towards bringing these criminals to justice. It is high time that women speak up and make Nigeria a better and safer place for them and their children.</div>

According to Mr Tukura, Mrs. Jonathan first opened a First Bank account and then “procured” the then Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Domestic Affairs, Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, to fund the account with “proceeds of unlawful activities.”</div>

“The funds sought to be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria are not the 1st respondent’s lawful earnings but are rather reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities”, the deponent averred.</div>

<div dir="auto" style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">
<div dir="auto">
Exactly this time eight years ago, in the wake of the 2011 general elections, I was invited as a journalist with Encomium Ng back then to cover the unveiling of the now defunct CPC's gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Ambassador Abayomi Mumuni Nurain by Mrs Lucy Ajayi, the current Executive Director, Lagos International Trade Fair Complex Management Board.<a name='more'></a></div>
<div dir="auto">
<br /></div>
<div dir="auto">
In fact, I wanted to send an I.T student because the candidate to be unveiled by the new political party, founded by President Buhari, was neither of the ruling #ACN nor PDP, the then leading opposition party in Lagos. However, my instincts (as guided by Allah) told me, "Rasheed, you must go", and I went. AlhamduliLlah, I didn't regret attending the press briefing because Allah has used this man of uncommon honour and integrity to do great things in my life in the last eight years. </div>
<div dir="auto">
<br /></div>
<div dir="auto">
I still remember how I prayed he won the 2011 governorship election, as he truly meant well for Lagosians. I marvelled at his beautiful master plan for the new Lagos of his dreams during my exclusive interview with him then. He is not like the usual Nigerian politician, whose main business is politics. He is the president of the London-based Wall Street Global Finance Limited and CEO of several multinational companies home and abroad. He is also a renowned global security expert whose books have had a positive influence on the war against terror all over the world. But, as Allah has destined, he didn't win the election. He also wanted to contest against Governor Ambode in 2015, but later stepped down for the latter following the merger between ACN, CPC, and other parties, which led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC). </div>
<div dir="auto">
<br /></div>
<div dir="auto">
I later got to know how close he was to President Muhammadu Buhari. Thisday Newspaper, in an article published in 2015, described Mumuni and Buhari as "siamese twins", noting that their relationship was another classic example of friendship made in heaven. According to the newspaper, Buhari, who is seeking re-election as Nigeria's President, highly respected Mumuni's views on political issues since their days in ANPP and CPC, before moving to APC. </div>
<div dir="auto">
<br /></div>
<div dir="auto">
Why am I saying this now, one may ask? It has no link with the current elections. It may also interest you that this selfless man jettisoned his ambition to re-contest after pleas from friends and associates. However, I felt excited when I saw a Facebook notification this afternoon, celebrating our 8 years of friendship on the platform. Thank you, Facebook, for giving me the opportunity to celebrate this great man who has quietly empowered thousands of Nigerians, even without holding any political office. May Allah reward you abundantly for your service to humanity, Aare Jagunmade 1 of Lagos.</div>

<div>
Ecobank ex-manager, Ifeanyi Azike has been charged with an alleged fraud of N561 million by the Police Special Fraud Unit.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Azike has been arraigned on two counts before the Federal High Court in Lagos. The police accused him of fraudulently obtaining N150m from one Mr Okafor Kelvin, a customer of the bank, on the claim that he would help him purchase the Federal Government Treasury Bill in Ecobank.</div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div>
The police further alleged that Azike converted a sum of N411 million belonging to the bank and its customers to his own.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The prosecuting counsel for the police, Daniel Apochi, told Justice Ayokunle Faji last week that Azike committed the offences between 2016 and 2017.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He said the defendant acted contrary to sections 1 (1) (a), 15(1)(2) and 15(2)of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud related Offence Act No. 14 of 2006, and was liable to be punished under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, Azike pleaded not guilty to the two counts. While adjourning till March 8, 2019 for the hearing of his bail application, Justice Faji ordered that Azike should be remanded in the prison custody.</div>
